Judy Peskin is no stranger to the South Orange-Maplewood area as she grew up in Maplewood and attended Columbia High School. Judy’s love for languages grew at Middlebury College in Vermont, as a French major, and especially in Paris, where she spent her junior year. After graduation she got a Master’s Degree in Education at Teachers College in New York City. She met her husband, Ken Peskin, on a blind date in New York. Judy taught French and then Spanish mostly at the high school level for many years, which included arranging half a dozen international trips for her students and cultural outings in New York City.
Judy and Ken set down roots in New Jersey to raise their family of three daughters who have made them proud grandparents to six beautiful grandchildren. Judy and Ken travel widely to visit their family to spend as much time as possible with them.
Judy’s journey with JESPY House began decades ago, first as a committed donor who then grew into an inspiring Board Member who has been serving as a dedicated Fundraising Committee Co-Chair for years. Judy’s passion for JESPY stems from seeing her lifelong friend raise a child with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) and her desire to take action to improve the lives of others with I/DD by providing them with choices and a pathway to independence in an inclusive community environment.
Throughout her retirement years, Judy’s desire to help others has not wavered. She also volunteers at Jewish Vocational Services and at Literacy Volunteers of New Jersey as an English as a Second Language (ESL) tutor. When Judy is not volunteering or spending time with family, you may find her playing bridge, knitting, traveling, or participating in one of many activities.
